Fishermen, environmentalists cheer Klamath report (Bend.com), 7/30/04
July 30 - PORTLAND -- Commercial fishermen and conservationists on
Friday today applauded the release of the California Department of Fish
and Game's final report on the causes of the tragic 2002 fish kill on
the Klamath River. The exhaustive, peer-reviewed report's primary
conclusion that
low water flows resulting from upstream irrigation diversions were at
the heart of the kill is consistent with previous analyses conducted by
the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Yurok Tribe.

High
mercury risk in fish raises alarm (Seattle Post-Intelli(WA)), 8/4/04
'Problem a lot more widespread than we realized,' group says
Mercury is turning up in fish in Washington state's remote lakes and
reservoirs at levels that could be harmful to women and children, and
more than half the fish tested nationwide also are contaminated,
according to a study by an environmental coalition. The results
highlight the need to take stronger action to reduce mercury pollution,
particularly from coal-burning power plants, according to Clear the Air,
a coalition pushing
for more stringent mercury-emission standards.

POSTERS:
At
the August 2004 ChemCom Workshop at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA,
Barbara Sitzman displayed a selection of posters that you may wish to
purchase. I've cut in a list of all the USGS Posters available listed
on this page:

Each
poster listed below was originally available in two versions--grade
school and middle school. Several of the posters are currently
out-of-print. Six posters of the nine-poster set may be viewed at the
following Web site:
http://water.usgs.gov/public/outreach/OutReach.html. The front side
of each poster has a colorful cartoon graphic depicting the topic of the
poster. The back sides of the posters contain educational activities,
definitions, and interpretive questions concerning the poster topic. The
educational materials on the back determine the appropriate grade level.
The posters can be joined to create a wall mural. Black-and-white
posters do not have activities printed on the back side and are coloring
exercises for children in grades K-5.

I was unable to find the other poster for ordering that Barbara
shared ("The Water Cycle: Nature's Recycling System", US Dept. of
Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, Water Environment Federation)
*** however, I did find one really awesome poster that you can probably
just print or save to your computer and print out in color...very
detailed and useful for Unit 1:
www.mainstreetsusa.com/ ptec/wc3.htm
or the simpler USGS version at:
http://www.ncar.ucar.edu/eo/basics/images/usgs_water_cycle.jpg
or other available .jpg files online that are of quality :
ftp://ftp.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/images download both they hydro1 and
the water_use.gif from this location...(right click and save)
***Actually, now that I've reviewed all the downloads, Barbara's Poster
is actually the hydro2.jpg located on the image page above (ftp://ftp.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/images/hycycle2.jpg).
I have been unable to find a location to order it but you can at least
display it as a printed color overhead or on an LCD projector.
